NC – Winter storm safety and preparedness tips

We Are Rescue

1-3-2025

As a winter weather advisory is in effect for Ashe, Avery, Yancey, Mitchel, and Watauga Counties in the next few days, let’s review some winter storm safety and preparedness tips:

1. Check your emergency kit. Don’t forget to have supplies in your car in case you’re stranded in inclement weather. Also, keeping your fuel tank full will protect your car’s fuel line from freezing AND keep you warm if you’re caught in weather-snarled traffic.

2. Carbon monoxide kills! Never operate generators, camp stoves, or other alternative heating sources inside your home.

3. Bring pets inside if possible; otherwise, try to move them to warm, sheltered areas and make sure they have access to food and non-frozen drinking water.

4. Monitor local media and National Weather Service broadcasts for conditions, advisories, watches, or warnings in your area.
